China Simplifies Visa Application Process for American Tourists

visa • 25 March 2026

China has announced simplified visa application procedures for American tourists, effective April 1, 2026. The streamlined process reduces required documentation and introduces an online pre-application system that can cut in-person appointment times to under 15 minutes. Key changes include the elimination of the detailed travel itinerary requirement for standard tourist (L) visas and the acceptance of digital hotel booking confirmations instead of printed copies. The 10-year multiple-entry visa remains available for US passport holders at 40. Chinese consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Houston will all implement the new system. Third-party visa services are also updating their processes, with most offering the simplified application at unchanged fees of approximately 0-50 above the consular fee.
