China Visa Update — 5 April 2026
visa • 6 April 2026
American travelers now have significantly expanded options for entering China in 2026, including **visa-free entry for up to 30 days** and an upgraded **240-hour transit waiver allowing up to 10 days** in designated regions without a traditional visa.[1][2] ## Visa-Free and Transit Options More than 70 countries currently enjoy China's visa-free arrangements, and the U.S. remains positioned to benefit from these expanded policies.[1] The 240-hour transit scheme—which replaced the previous 72 and 144-hour options—now covers major hubs including Beijing, Shanghai, and areas across 24 provincial-level regions.[1] This extended transit waiver has already driven a 60 percent jump in visa-free arrivals and is being expanded to additional seaports and high-speed-rail hubs before the summer travel peak.[2] To qualify for visa-free or transit entry, you'll need a valid U.S. passport, proof of an onward ticket to a third country, and entry through a designated port.[1] Importantly, each scheme has specific geographic restrictions on where you can travel within China, so verify the latest consular guidance before booking.[1] ## Streamlined Travel Infrastructure Beyond visa simplifications, China has rolled out a comprehensive policy package as of early April 2026 aimed at welcoming international visitors.[2] Hotels above three-star level must now offer at least two international e-wallet payment options by year-end, while provinces hosting major trade fairs are required to activate foreign-card payment channels within 24 hours of a complaint.[2] Enhanced English-language signage is also being implemented at transport hubs and scenic attractions to improve navigation for American travelers.[2]Sources
