China in Spring vs Fall: Best Time to Visit Compared

The Two Best Windows to Visit China

If you've researched the best time to visit China, you'll have seen the same answer everywhere: spring (April-May) and fall (September-October). Both are excellent. But they're not identical, and the differences matter depending on what you want from your trip.

Weather Comparison

Spring (April-May): Temperatures are mild across most of China — typically 60-77°F in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an. Rain is occasional but not heavy. Northern China is dry and pleasant. Southern China can be more humid.

Fall (September-October): Similar temperatures but drier and clearer air, especially in northern China. Beijing in October often has brilliant blue skies. Late October can get cool in northern regions.

Verdict: Fall edges spring for weather, particularly for northern China destinations.

Crowd Levels

Spring: Moderate crowds. Avoid Labour Day (May 1-5) domestic travel surge.

Fall: Avoid Golden Week (October 1-7) — China's biggest domestic travel period. Outside these dates, September and late October are excellent.

Photography Conditions

Spring: Cherry blossoms, emerging green landscapes, soft diffused light.

Fall: Golden foliage at the Great Wall, clear blue skies, sharp contrast for architectural photography. Fall wins for dramatic images.

Our Recommendation

October (outside Golden Week) is the single best month to visit China. The weather is ideal, the photography conditions are outstanding, and the fall atmosphere is magical. April-May is a very close second.
